Android tablets are the newest way to catch up with your friends, browse the web and check out music and movies. They are usually just a solid, black slate and they shed the bulk and large keyboard usually associated with larger laptop pcs.

If there is no keyboard though, then how do tablets work? How can you type anything?

Every tablet has what is known as a touchscreen. This is a screen that reacts to your touch, the same as your touchpad on your laptop. So instead of using a mouse to select icons on screen you can simply touch them with your finger or a plastic stylus (like a pen with no ink). But there’s more, as you can also ‘sweep’ your finger across the screen to change page, play games and move icons.

There are different types of touchscreen however, so let’s look at what they are and the differences between them:

Resistive: These touchscreens are a sandwich of layers that are very slightly apart. As you touch the screen and place pressure you will cause the layers to touch in a certain point and then your tablet will know that you have touched here and react accordingly. Perhaps opening an app or pausing a game.

Their strengths are that they are pretty tough as they are usually made from a kind of plastic glass. Since they are relatively simple technology they are also quite cheap, so a resistive touchscreen will keep costs down.

The drawbacks are that some people believe that they aren’t too sensitive, as the tablet has to wait a few instants for your finger or stylus to make the connection between layers. They also really need a stylus or long fingernail as just touching with your fingertip sometimes doesn’t register.

Capacitative: This touchscreen is a flat, hard pane of glass coated with an electrical conductor. The human body is also an electrical conductor, therefore when you touch the glass it creates an electrical connection which is your ‘selection’ just like clicking a mouse.

The strengths of this type of screen are that they actually look brighter and sharper than resistive screen as they are glass not plastic and that they register touch very quickly and easily so there’s no need for a stylus.

The drawbacks are that they are quite expensive as they are complex and, being glass, are prone to breaking if the tablet is dropped or squashed.

So which to choose? Honestly neither is better than the other, but you may want to think about if you’re happy to use a stylus instead of your finger. Capacitative screens can often look brighter, so if you’re into movies then they may be the way forward. They’re also good for heavy gamers as they can often react faster to your touch. However if you’re just looking for an Android tablet for general use (a bit of email writing, music and web browsing) then you can save cash and have the same functionality with a resistive screen.

All tablets allow users to browse the Internet with their fingertips, flick through photos, read e-books and even watch films but which tablets really stand out from the crowd?

Apple iPad

The iPad has a 9.7 inch backlit LED touchscreen, a screen resolution of 1024 x 768, and weights 1.5 pounds. It also has up to 10 hours of battery life.

The iPad offers Wi-Fi + 3G superfast data speeds of up to 7.2 Mbps over the 3G mobile networks so users can access the Internet wherever and whenever they need to.

Users can access over 25,000 apps available from the Apple app store, the interface is very user friendly and you can also use the iPad to watch TV. Bluetooth is enabled to send and receive data for free.

The cons are that the iPad doesn’t support Flash, which is a shame. This means that websites using this will be shut off to iPad users. The battery is also built in so if anything goes wrong, it will be costly to fix. There’s also no camera or USB port.

Samsung Galaxy

The Samsung Galaxy has a smaller touchscreen than the iPad at just 7 inches and weighs just 13.8 ounces. The screen resolution is a bit lower than the iPad at 1024 x 600, but the dots per inch are higher.

Unlike the iPad, it can be used as a phone, also has a 5MP camera and can support Flash. Its battery life is slightly less at just over 9 hours.

Google Android is a big selling point for the Samsung Galaxy and could clinch the sale for many fans of this operating system which also runs on smartphones such as the HTC Desire

Although only around 200 apps will be available at launch, the price is anticipated to be a lot cheaper than the iPad.

Toshiba Folio 100

The Folio 100 is Toshiba’s entry into the tablet race, opting for a 10.1 inch touchscreen and weighing nearly twice as much as the Galaxy at 1.6 pounds.

The battery isn’t as impressive as the Galaxy or the iPad at 7 hours, but comes with the Android OS, is Flash compatible, 16GB flash storage, Bluetooth, a built in 1.3MP webcam, SDHC card slot, HDMI, a USB port and audio jacks.

It’s not as aesthetically pleasing with its plastic casing as the Galaxy or the iPad but is considerably cheaper.

Price: £329 Release date: October 2010

Fusion Garage JooJoo

Made by Fusion Garage, the JooJoo has been slated by tech reviewers for its tiny battery life at just 2.5 hours and its uninspiring user interface and lack of apps available.

It has a larger screen than the iPad at 12.1 inches, a screen resolution of 1366 x 768 and it boots up in just 9 seconds. It also has a front mounted camera and a USB port, which the iPad does not.

It’s very clear that the JooJoo is in need of a few tweaks here and there but reviewers have given this iPad alternative far too much of a hard time. After all, it supports Flash, looks sleek and is great for browsing the net whilst on the move.

Price: £374 Release date: 2011 but already available in the US

Archos 10.1 Android

The French electronics company has jumped on the tablet bandwagon recently launching five tablets, one of them being the Archos Android tablet. The tablet has a 10 inch screen, weighs just 16.9 ounces and is 12mm thick. It has its own app store (appslib.com) with a sizable choice of 5,000 apps to choose from, has an Android OS, is WiFi enabled and comes with Bluetooth.

Its very easy on the eye with its stainless steel structure looking slick, has a front mounted camera, and a built-in leg stand. Other features include USB port, HDMI output, HD video playback and a MicroSD card supporting up to 16GB.

At over £150 cheaper than the iPad, this will be a serious contender for the most popular tablet.

Price: £269 Release date: October 2010

So, as for which tablet to go with, I personally would go for the Samsung Galaxy or the Archos 101 Android tablet depending on your budget.

I certainly won’t be purchasing an iPad until all of its issues have been sorted out which won’t be until iPad 2 is released during 2011.

If you’re on a home Wifi network that has a little traffic, it might be more reliable than at a Starbuck’s with more traffic. But everything pretty much depends on the network you’re using, not on the Kindle itself.

Are you one of those people who listen to their iPods for hours each day? So am I. And for the longest time I have recently been trying to figure out how to play my i-pod inside my car. This is why I decided to do some research and eventually came across the answer to my problems-the autoradio adapter.

Marvell Technology Group Ltd., a company that makes chips for a range of high tech products, communications equipment, cellphones, etc, has planned to launch a new kind of computer. The company has named it “Plug Computers”. Like its name this device would be plugged in to home electrical sockets and would be of socket like size. Yet it will have enough power to manage user’s digital media and enable them to view it over the Internet from outside the home.

In today’s digital world we store each and every information in the digital form as texts, images, videos in digital cameras, cellphones, notebooks. In such a way we are storing our personal information in dispersed style – in the form of files, that make them inefficient as well as risky. Losing a laptop or mobile phone will cost us losing a precious photo or video.

Marvell is promoting the “plug computers” as a perfect solution for this. The idea is to have an ultra-small computer plugged into an electrical socket. Despite the small size the plug computer will have enough processing power and network connectivity to manage and serve media stored on an attached thumb-drive or hard drive. You can access the plug computer over your home network, enabling you to get at your files from wherever you needed in your house.

However this idea is not new and Apple’s Time Capsule works a little like that. It acts like a central repository for data by wirelessly backing up all the connected Macs. HP’s MediaSmart Servers are a host of “smart” external hard drives connecting a PC via USB and store your media longterm, and serve it to connected TVs and audio systems without needing the PC’s intervention.

Marvel is planning to miniaturize all this technology and make it small and convenient. The company is also emphasizing on the green aspects as well by maintaining the eco friendliness of the plan. Plu computers are supposed to draw less than 5W of power that is much less compared to a PC running as a media server.

Company is planning to launch it on a small and economic-enough scale. Marvell will be sourcing the chips while partner companies make the software & hardware. The price is interesting targeted at that makes this idea different from other tech solutions.
